Liaudiškas šventės pavadinimas – Žolinė – atsiradęs dėl tradicijos Mišių metu šventinti žolynus. Istoriniai šaltiniai byloja, jog po Jėzaus Motinos mirties Jeruzalėje uolos nišoje palaidoto kūno nebuvo – apaštalai rado tik daugybę gražių gėlių. Remiantis šia istorija, vėliau išsivystė tikėjimas, jog Marija į dangų buvo paimta ne tik siela, bet ir kūnu. 1950 m. popiežius Pijus XII tikėjimą, kad Marija buvo paimta į Dangų su siela ir kūnu, paskelbė Bažnyčios dogma.
Šią dieną bažnyčiose šventinami tikinčiųjų atsinešti šių metų derliaus vaisiai ir žolynai (Ap I, 203).
